This original art piece is made up of four smaller encaustic wax art pieces in one wooden frame. It features my original drawing of a bird (waxwing), a rusted old metal piece containing a birds nest made of wire and a stone, a wire tree, old hardware pieces, and a robin's feather. Many layers of encaustic (beeswax) medium, prints of vintage paper, and oil pigment are also used. The four mini pieces (each 4 inches by 4 inches) are framed together in a wooden shadowbox frame in a lovely shade of midnight blue. On the sides of each mini art piece are drips from the hot beeswax medium, which adds to the tactile nature of the finished piece.
The encaustic wax encases the images, and each new layer lets the layers below show through. Little found objects like skeleton keys and old hardware, well loved over time, add to the story. Encaustic collage pieces offer a wonderful depth, texture, and tactile nature for the viewer to enjoy.
I use copies of old photos (so as not to destroy the originals with the heat of the waxing and fusing process) and when artifacts like keys and hardware are incorporated, they are authentic found vintage items. Overall size is 10 x 10 inches. On birch board, signed, ready for hanging.
