This original art piece is a collage using a vintage 1920s photograph from my collection, vintage wallpaper, a bit of rusted antique window screen, antique tacks, layers of encaustic (beeswax) medium and oil pigments. The 4-inch by 4-inch collage piece is framed in a 6 x 6 birch frame in midnight blue. A hanger made of an old hardware piece is attached.
The encaustic wax encases the images, and each new layer lets the layers below show through. Many of my pieces incorporate little found artifacts like keys, bits of rusty hardware, and jewels, salvaged from attics, barns, and basements, well loved over time. Encaustic collage pieces offer a wonderful depth, texture, and tactile nature for the viewer to enjoy.
I use copies of my photos (so as not to destroy the originals with the heat of the wax and fuser) and when objects like keys and hardware are included, they are authentic vintage pieces. On cradled birch board, signed, ready for hanging.
